The Manopsychotisches Ballroom

The time has come to launch the much awaited, Eustratia lingerie range (which I have been working on for a few months now and I’m really pleased with) and I’m excited to be launching it at the event that I’m co-hosting with my stockist at TG Manchester promoter Frankie Knuckles.

The event is called The Manopsychotisches Ballroom and will feature art, performance, fashion and fetish elements, hopefully attracting a diverse and interesting (but not seedy) crowd.

The picture of my on the flyer is by a lovely set with SJImage which I can hopefully share with you soon.

The new lingerie range has a vintage twist while still retaining key Eustratia features and contemporary details. The styling I have chosen will contrast will the arty and industrial feel of the venue so we wanted to tie these elements together through the show. We have planned a guerrilla inspired, art-installation style fashion show where men will build and then dismantle part of a wall to reveal the models and then roll out turf for them to walk into the crowd on.

The range won’t be added to the online store till it has been professionally photographed but I will be taking orders at the launch.

Club Lash show

The first Eustratia fashion show of the year took place at the Club Lash relaunch at its new venue, Alter Ego.

Club Lash is Manchester’s longest running fetish club and also the first fetish club I visited, shortly after I turned 18. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed and the club caters for players and clubbers alike, especially with the larger dance floor the new venue offers. My favourite new addition were the silky kimonos made available to smokers while they stand outside, I think this practice should be adopted by all clubs that encourage skimpy or unusual dress.

Though I like the venue on the whole, the stage is quite small and there is no dressing room so I had to make some change to my usual repertoire. Some male friends helped us close off the toilets for a few minutes so the models could get dresses and I made the show quite simple, with emphasis on the models and outfits.

Unfortunately we weren’t able to get a video but the official club photographer took some snaps for us.

Winter wonderland show

I don’t always have time to update as often as I’d like but I do try to keep things more or less in chronological order, this sometimes causes me to fall even further behind because I find it hard to publish a particular post. This is one of those posts, I have thought about what I wanted it to be like for ages because I was searching for a more refined and straightforward way to present my personal personal projects but I guess I’m not quite there yet.

As I have mentioned previously, this winter I was very inspired by wintery imagery, white animals and snowy settings. I really enjoyed gathering inspiration for the Eustratia winter wonderland shoot so when a show slot came up at the Manchester Alternative and burlesque fair, I jumped at the opportunity. I never usually plan seasonal seasonal stuff in time but my general love of animal-inspired headwear and white latex came in useful here.

winterboardThis was my main inspiration board.

I wanted to tell a story and I left it would come across best if the setting was right so the props were important. The main part of the story takes place in an enchanted forest so trees were essential, I’ve wanted to have something like this on set for ages so I ordered some foam board and thanks to the efforts of the multi-talented Richard Ayres, it was made possible. I think he will aslo need a prop portfolio soon.

I also purchased a snow machine, which I think made all the difference, a large mirror, some small animals and hanging stars to complete the scene.

With the event being so close to Christmas I wanted to add some traditional elements into the story, unrecognisable as they may be. I stumbled upon the story of Befana, the Italian, gift giving witch. I loved the fact that as well as putting sweets into the boots of “good” children she also took time to sweep the floor while she was there, utilising her witch broom to show she was a good housekeeper. I decided to put her in the show but I totally changed her appearance to fit in with my aesthetic.

witch 3My decision to add this traditional element along with the girls starting of in the real world and journeying, in a dream, to the enchanted forest made the execution slightly more complicated. I was determined to make it work because it was the most unique part of the show and I left it gave more depth to the story.

The final narrative was as follows:

It is the night before Christmas. 2 girls go to bed in their room, excited for what the next day might bring. They have just fallen asleep when they hear a tinkling sounds coming from the mirror. The one nearest gets up and notices she can go through!

Once through the mirror the two girls find themselves in a winter wonderland, they are wondering around in awe when they meet a witch. She is gathering flowers in a basket and the girls decide to help her. To thank them for their kindness the witch gives them a magic coin that they can use to call upon her whenever they need help.

Next the girls come across winter woodland animals, dancing between the trees, they are transfixed and watch the graceful dance until their attention is drawn away by a loud noise. The snow queen and her extravagant pet unicorns approach the animals and circle menacingly. The queen decides to turn the animals into ice statues so she can admire their beauty whenever she likes, then they leave.

The girls come out from hiding behind the trees and are sad to see the animals cold and motionless, then they remember the coin and decide to use it to help the animals, they throw the coin into the air and surely enough shortly after the witch appears, she gently touches each animal and breathes life back into it. The animals have been turned back to normal and it starts to snow, everyone frolics happily.

The witch then leads the girls back through the mirror and into their own room. She puts them to bed, leaves glitter in their boots and sweeps the floor before leaving. The girls awake on Christmas day to find the glitter in their boots, a magical reminder of their journey to the winter wonderland, they are happy.

I’m quite happy with the way the show turned out despite the technical difficulties we had on the day. I’m grateful to everyone who contributed/took part and I think the models did an especially good job considering we didn’t get to rehearse with the props in place. Visually, I wish there was a white or generally light coloured backdrop, I think it would have really added to the set. It isn’t majorly important but I think it’s helpful for myself to make a note of such things because it isn’t something I would normally think about before planning a show.

Though it was a latex fashion show, I mostly enjoyed experimenting with different textures and making the non latex items. I had lots of fun with the fake fur, a material I’ve never used before. Of course I had to try on all the silly animal headwear!

Clothes show live

I recently returned from trading at Clothes show live in Birmingham where I shared a stall with Little miss delicious. It was my first time doing such a big event and I guess it was worth it for the experience though on the whole I’d say it went less than smoothly.

I first started to suspect that the organisation might not be great when the person we were booking with neglected to reply to my emails. Also that they might not value the smaller brands as much when they ignored the request for my banner to be added to their site (which is supposed to be part of the promotion included in the price). The problems escalated when they started complaining that one of my payments hadn’t been received 2 weeks prior to the event and continued sending me emails even after I had provided the relevant proof of payment. This was easily resolved when I finally managed to get a phone number for them which leads me to think that perhaps they hadn’t actually looked for it on the system before then.

Most of my time for about the month and a half leading up to the event was spent making stock and in my opinion, I had adhered to the “low cost/high volume” rule that would allow me to do well at clothes show. I didn’t think they had ever had a latex designer there before so I was intrigued to see how well I would do but after hearing how busy and fun it was I guess my hopes must have been a bit too high.

We were placed in the “off-beat boutique” section and though there were a few great stands selling quality hand made and customized goods there also seemed to be a fair amount of wholesalers near us. Between the wholesalers and the big brands with their “buy 3 get 12 free” type discounts, our reduced prices were still left looking way too high for the bargain-hunting customers that had already spent a fair amount on their ticket, transport and time-table. Needless to say it had become evident by the second morning that I wasn’t going to do very well.

Kat, my wonderful and helpful assistant!

Standing all day was tiring and being away from the studio so close to xmas was a setback, especially with orders to send out and new products to list. I feel like going some online promotion and sorting out all my new products would probably have brought me better custom.

Customer wise, I was actually surprised by the amount of people who had nice things to say about my work and even realised how long it must have taken to make some of the items. Of course there were those who recognised latex purely as something lady Gaga or Katy Perry would wear and also those who just wanted to feel the underwear or “plastic pants” and ask if they were real, if I was wearing some or even in one case if they had something to do with baking! There were also a handful of lovely people who came up to me and suggested alternative shows where I might do better. It was nice of them but at the time just highlighted the fact that it was evident I didn’t fit in there.

We started off with quite a fun party who were all staying under the roof of model/photographer Kaykay Sakura but by the end of the third day the other two traders in our party had gone home leaving me to weigh up long walk to the train station vs expensive taxi as means of getting to the venue. On the plus side I got more space to arrange my products, be in solely for my own pleasure as it was expected to be a quite day.

Rearranged stand

The Monday was one of the slowest days of my life with only about 10 customers even looking over toward the stand (I ended up making £12) and I only got through thanks to a few other supportive traders and my lovely assistant. By this point I was also coming down with a cold and ended up leaving on the Tuesday afternoon due to a family emergency.

By Monday I had a cold and wasn't wearing latex any more

Even on the busier days the show wasn’t as packed as I was initially  lead to believe it would be, I think this may have just been a quiet year. Of course the current economic climate isn’t great for spending and some of the returning traders commented on how it has been getting worse every year.

Becki

Overall I think the event was good, just not right for me. There are plenty of other brands that do well and go back every year, though these do tend to be the larger ones with old stock that can be heavily reduced. I would recommend any smaller labels and especially those selling hand made products seriously think about it before trading there. I wish I had researched into it further but having never been myself I was just going on what I’d heard from others.

Moth twins!

Despite everything it was great to be involved in such a large event and I think I will find it easier to select appropriate shows in the future. I do not intend to put anyone off attending clothes show by this post, but to encourage new designers in a similar position to me to take more care when choosing trade shows.

I handed out plenty of flyers so if nothing else at least I have intriduced some people to latex fashion.
